REDSKINS SIGN FIRST-ROUND PICK TRENT WILLIAMS
JULY 30, 2010
LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have signed first-round draft pick Trent Williams. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The team also released defensive lineman Trey Jacobs and placed offensive lineman Mike Williams on the Reserve/Non-Football Illness list.
Williams, 21, was chosen No. 4 overall out of the University of Oklahoma, where he started 39-of-50 games for the Sooners, including 12 at left tackle and 27 on the right side. He was a first-team All-American as a senior in 2009, a third-team All-American as a junior in 2008, and a second-team Freshman All-American in 2006.
Last season, Williams (6-5, 314) earned consensus first-team All-Big XII Conference honors as he shifted to left tackle for his final season and allowed just two quarterback sacks. With Williams as the lone returning starter along the offensive line, the Sooners ranked 11th in the nation with an average of 289.23 passing yards per game and 16th nationally in fewest sacks allowed per game (1.15).
As a junior, Williams started all 14 games and earned All-Big XII Conference first-team honors from the league’s coaches. He allowed just a half-sack and two pressures in 517 pass plays, while being penalized only twice. That season, Oklahoma finished third in the nation in passing (349.36 ypg), total offense (547.86 ypg) and fewest sacks allowed (0.93 spg), while leading the country in scoring (51.14 ppg).
In 2007, Williams played in all 14 games, with seven starts at right tackle. The Sooners ranked fifth in the nation in scoring (42.29 ppg) and fewest sacks allowed (1.0 spg), while averaging 448.93 yards per game, good for 19th in the country.
During his freshman season, Williams played in 11 games at right tackle and moved into the starting lineup for the final six contests. He was part of a unit that led the Big XII and finished 11th in the nation in fewest sacks allowed per game (1.21). The Sooners’ rushing attack produced 177.14 yards per game, while the offense averaged 30.29 points, the 19th-best mark in the country.
Williams attended Longview (Tex.) High School, where he was a second-team all-state selection and a unanimous first team all-district choice as a senior. He was born Aug., 19, 1988.
Jacobs signed with the team as a college free agent out of Liberty on April 28, 2010.
