O's Take Game 1 At Yankees

Orioles win at the Yankees 5-4 on Monday night (July 30, 2012).

1.    The O’s improved to 54-49 overall and 29-23 on the road.
     a.    The O’s improved to 27-35 since their 27-14 start.

     b.    The O’s improved to 1-0 on their six-game road trip.
     c.    The O’s won for just the 15th time in 37 games.

2.    Relievers Darren O’Day, Pedro Strop and Jim Johnson combined for 2 1/3 scoreless innings.

     a.    Johnson gave up a double and a walk but improved to 31-for-34 on saves, recording two strikeouts.

3.    The O’s totaled 13 hits.

     a.    Right fielder Nick Markakis had an RBI double, two singles, an RBI sac fly and a run.
     b.    Third baseman Wilson Betemit (BEH-teh-meet) had a solo homer (12) and a single and finished with two runs.
     c.    Shortstop J.J. Hardy had an RBI single and another single.
     d.    First baseman Mark Reynolds had a double, a single and a run.
     e.    Second baseman Omar Quintanilla (keen-tuh-NEE-uh) had a single, a walk, an RBI sac fly and a run.

4.    Negatives from the win:

     a.    Rookie Miguel Gonzalez allowed four runs in 6 2/3 innings, giving up six hits (including three homers), no walks and a balk versus eight strikeouts on 111 pitches.
          i.    Gonzalez improved to 3-2 with a 4.46 ERA over eight games (five starts) this season.
     b.    The O’s totaled just two walks and went 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
          i.    Left fielder Lew Ford went 0-for-4 with a strikeout.

5.    Injury/absence/roster update:

     a.    DH Jim Thome (TOH-mee) did not play for a third consecutive game due to neck spasms.
     b.    Second baseman Brian Roberts is on the 15-day disabled list and announced that he’s decided to undergo season-ending surgery on his right hip labral tear.
     c.    Starter Jason Hammel (right knee injury) is on the 15-day disabled list.
     d.    Infielder Robert Andino (left shoulder injury) is on the 15-day disabled list.
     e.    DH Nick Johnson (right wrist sprain) is on the 60-day disabled list.
     f.     Rookie reliever Stu Pomeranz (left oblique injury) is on the 60-day disabled list.
     g.    Left fielder Nolan Reimold (herniated disc) is on the 60-day disabled list.  He underwent what’s expected to be season-ending surgery on June 25, though it’s possible that he’ll play late in the season.  He said that his procedure is the same one that Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning had.  Reimold has five homers in just 16 games this season.
     h.    Pitcher Tsuyoshi Wada (soo-YOH-shee WAH-duh) (left elbow) is on the 60-day disabled list.  He underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery on May 11.
