Nationals lose to Colorado 5-1 on Friday night (July 6, 2012).
1. The Nats fell to 48-33 overall and 23-15 at home.
a. The Nats fell to 34-29 since their 14-4 start.
b. The Nats fell to 3-1 on their six-game homestand.
2. The Nats totaled just five hits and two walks and struck out nine times.
a. Second baseman Danny Espinosa went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.
b. Shortstop Ian Desmond went 0-for-4 with a strikeout.
c. Rookie left fielder Tyler Moore went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts.
d. Catcher Jesus Flores went 0-for-3 with a walk and 0-for-1 on runners trying to steal and committed an error (1) during the Rockies’ one-run second inning.
3. Reliever Tom Gorzelanny was credited with two runs in one inning.
4. Positives from the loss:
a. Starter Stephen Strasburg allowed three runs (two earned) in six innings on eight hits (including two homers by Rockies first baseman Tyler Colvin) and a walk versus six strikeouts on 107 pitches.
i. Colvin became the first hitter to hit two homers off Strasburg in the same game.
ii. Strasburg now has lost three consecutive starts, allowing eight earned runs in 15 innings.
iii. Strasburg fell to 9-4 with a 2.82 ERA over 17 starts this season.
b. Third baseman Ryan Zimmerman blasted a solo homer (8) in the ninth inning.
i. Zimmerman now is 18-for-54 with five homers over 12 games since receiving a cortisone shot in his ailing right shoulder before the 2-1 loss at the Orioles on June 24.
c. Reliever Henry Rodriguez tossed a perfect ninth inning, recording two strikeouts.
d. Reliever Ryan Mattheus retired the three batters he faced in the eighth inning.
5. Injury/absence/roster update:
a. Reliever Chien-Ming Wang (right hip strain) is on the 15-day disabled list.
b. Right fielder Jayson Werth (broken left wrist) is on the 60-day disabled list. He underwent surgery on May 7 and was expected to miss 10-12 weeks.
c. Outfielder Xavier Nady (right wrist tendinitis) is on the 15-day disabled list.
d. Reliever Drew Storen (right elbow) is on the 60-day disabled list. He underwent surgery on April 11 to remove a small bone fragment from his right elbow and is expected to return sometime around the All-Star break.
e. Catcher Wilson Ramos (torn right ACL and meniscus) is on the 60-day disabled list and is done for the season.
f. Catcher Sandy Leon (high right ankle sprain) is on the 15-day disabled list.
g. Catcher Carlos Maldonado (lower back strain) is on the 15-day disabled list.
h. Infielder Chad Tracy (right groin tear) is on the 15-day disabled list. He underwent surgery on May 31 and was expected to miss six to eight weeks if not the rest of the season.
i. Reliever Cole Kimball (right shoulder surgery) is on the 60-day disabled list.
j. First baseman Chris Marrero (torn left hamstring) is on the 60-day disabled list.
