Orioles lose at the Angels 9-7 on Thursday night (July 5, 2012).
1. The O’s fell to 44-38 overall and 22-18 on the road.
a. The O’s fell to 17-24 since their 27-14 start.
b. The O’s fell to 2-2 on their seven-game trip out west.
c. The O’s now have lost 11 of their last 16 games.
2. Reliever Luis Ayala allowed two runs in 1 1/3 innings on four hits.
3. Reliever Matt Lindstrom allowed one run in one inning.
4. The O’s went just 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
a. Center fielder Adam Jones went 0-for-5 with two strikeouts.
b. Third baseman Wilson Betemit (BEH-teh-meet) went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.
5. Positives from the loss:
a. The O’s totaled 11 hits.
i. Catcher Matt Wieters had a three-run homer (12) in the fourth inning, an RBI groundout in the second inning and a single. But he committed a throwing error (8) and a passed ball and went 0-for-4 on runners trying to steal.
ii. Rookie left fielder Xavier Avery had two singles, a walk, a stolen base and two runs but committed an error (1).
1. The O’s now have an MLB-worst 74 errors.
iii. DH Jim Thome (TOH-mee) had an RBI single in the first inning and another single. He did strike out twice.
iv. Rookie right fielder Ryan Flaherty had a solo homer (2) in the second inning and a single.
v. First baseman Mark Reynolds blasted a solo homer (7) in the second inning.
b. Shortstop J.J. Hardy had two walks and a run.
c. Relievers Kevin Gregg and Pedro Strop each tossed a scoreless inning.
6. Injury/roster/absence update.
a. Starter Jake Arrieta allowed six runs in 3 2/3 innings on five hits and three walks versus three strikeouts on 84 pitches and was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk after the game.
i. Arrieta now has a 6.13 ERA over 18 starts this season.
b. Pitchers Brian Matusz, Tommy Hunter and Zach Britton (left shoulder impingement) are at Triple-A Norfolk.
c. Infielder/outfielder Chris Davis was a late scratch from Thursday night's game with a trapezius muscle strain.
d. The O’s recalled infielder Joe Mahoney from Triple-A Norfolk prior to Thursday night’s game.
e. Texas starter Yu Darvish won the American League’s Final Vote. O’s starter Jason Hammel finished third.
f. Second baseman Brian Roberts (right groin strain) is on the 15-day disabled list.
g. DH Nick Johnson (right wrist sprain) is on the 15-day disabled list.
h. Right fielder Nick Markakis is on the 15-day disabled list for the first time in his career. He underwent successful surgery to remove a broken hamate bone from his right wrist on June 1 and was expected to miss three to four weeks.
i. Left fielder Nolan Reimold (herniated disc) is on the 60-day disabled list. He underwent what’s expected to be season-ending surgery on June 25, though it’s possible that he’ll play late in the season. He said that his procedure is the same one that Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning had. Reimold has five homers in just 16 games this season.
j. Right fielder Endy Chavez (strained right hamstring) is on the 15-day disabled list.
k. Rookie reliever Stu Pomeranz (left oblique injury) is on the 60-day disabled list.
l. Pitcher Tsuyoshi Wada (soo-YOH-shee WAH-duh) (left elbow) is on the 60-day disabled list. He underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery on May 11.
m. Catcher Taylor Teagarden (strained back) is on the 60-day disabled list.
