Matusz Shelled & Demoted; O's Have Three All-Stars, Maybe Four

Orioles lose to Cleveland 6-2 on Sunday afternoon (July 1, 2012).

1.    The O’s fell to 42-36 overall and 22-20 at home.
     a.    The O’s fell to 15-22 since their 27-14 start.

     b.    The O’s now have lost nine of their last 12 games.
     c.    The O’s concluded a 3-6 homestand.

2.    The O’s totaled just six hits and no walks and struck out 11 times.

     a.    Right fielder Chris Davis went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.  He did have an outfield assist.
     b.    DH Jim Thome (TOH-mee) went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in his O’s debut.
     c.    Second baseman Brian Roberts went 0-for-4 with a strikeout and now is batting .182.

3.    Catcher Ronnie Paulino had a single but committed two passed balls.

4.    Positives from the loss:

     a.    Rookie left fielder Ryan Flaherty had an RBI single.
     b.    Reliever Kevin Gregg allowed no runs in two-thirds of an inning.

5.    The O’s had three players selected to the American League All-Star team and one player selected as part of the A.L.’s Final Vote.

     a.    Center fielder Adam Jones was named to the A.L. All-Star Team.  He had an RBI double, a single, a stolen base and a run on Sunday and leads the O’s in homers (19), doubles (18), hits (94), on-base percentage (.345), slugging percentage (.556), batting average (.302), runs (52), RBI (42) and stolen bases (11).
     b.    Catcher Matt Wieters was named to the A.L. All-Star Team.  He’s batting just .249 but is second on the O’s in walks (28) and RBI (38) and is 15-for-42 on runners trying to steal (second in the A.L.).
     c.    Closer Jim Johnson was named to the A.L. All-Star Team.  He’s tied for the MLB lead with 23 saves (and in 24 chances) and has a 1.30 ERA over 34 games.
     d.    Starter Jason Hammel is one of five candidates for the A.L.’s Final Vote.  He’s 8-3 with a 3.29 ERA over 15 starts this season.

6.    Injury/roster/absence update.

     a.    Starter Brian Matusz allowed five runs (four earned) in four innings on seven hits (including two homers) and three walks versus two strikeouts.  He fell to 5-10 with a 5.42 ERA over 16 starts this season and was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk after the game.
     b.    Pitchers Tommy Hunter and Zach Britton (left shoulder impingement) are at Triple-A Norfolk.
     c.    The O’s recalled pitcher Miguel Gonzalez from Triple-A Norfolk and optioned outfielder Xavier Avery to Norfolk prior to the game.  Gonzalez allowed one run in 4 1/3 innings, recording five strikeouts.
     d.    DH Nick Johnson (right wrist sprain) is on the 15-day disabled list.   
     e.    Right fielder Nick Markakis is on the 15-day disabled list for the first time in his career.  He underwent successful surgery to remove a broken hamate bone from his right wrist on June 1 and was expected to miss three to four weeks.
     f.     Left fielder Nolan Reimold (herniated disc) is on the 60-day disabled list.  He underwent what’s expected to be season-ending surgery on June 25, though it’s possible that he’ll play late in the season.  He said that his procedure is the same one that Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning had.  Reimold has five homers in just 16 games this season.
     g.    Right fielder Endy Chavez (strained right hamstring) is on the 15-day disabled list.
     h.    Rookie reliever Stu Pomeranz (left oblique injury) is on the 60-day disabled list.
     i.     Pitcher Tsuyoshi Wada (soo-YOH-shee WAH-duh) (left elbow) is on the 60-day disabled list.  He underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery on May 11.
     j.     Catcher Taylor Teagarden (strained back) is on the 60-day disabled list.
